How it works

SounD, Data Sciences & Architecture

We focus on human-centered design to improve your facility’s architectural performance. NOIISE provides a sensor-based system for analyzing sound features, acoustic quality, voice & emotion detection. It works as an extension to the existing IoT system, reacts to real-time changing conditions, and algorithmically generates recommendations for acoustic preferences and spatial improvements. In the application for Android and iOS the end user can set up noise and space preferences. The app suggests the most suitable working spot. It refreshes in short intervals to track the noise development of space. Co-working space operators can use the ap to see how the space develops in different time periods. The end-user’s mobile app and the initial landing page of the operator’s web dashboard show the floorplans and their noise level. The graph displays the current noise-level versus the recent averages for each room within the list. A data-analysis tool in the backend allows for the aggregation of data on an hourly basis, and thus offers an excellent starting point for evaluation of the co-working space, its utilization at any time of the day.

Use Cases

Berlin Betahaus

A pilot study is being carried out in the premises of the co-working space Betahaus. Through machine learning on the acoustic level NOIISE deploys data sets from internal and external data sources. A graphic user interface combines them with building information, such as room height, surface material, or natural light conditions. NOIISE allows for real-time understanding of space, aiming at more-efficient usage of space and a happy work-place.

Open-Plan Offices

Managing noise levels and maintaining acoustic quality can be challenging for open-plan offices. NOIISE provides a triangulated sound-based spatial analysis that helps facility owners detect different noise sources such as printers, air conditioning, or conversations. Thus, our intelligent system optimizes room settings for the best acoustic performance and improves productivity and users‘ well-being.

Outdoor Recreational Event

Organizing a successful open-air event or a concert requires optimal space use in acoustic quality and noise regulations compliance. NOIISE measures the acoustic emission of localized sound sources and processes it with machine learning. Thus, event organizers can adjust the sound levels according to real-time sound data analysis and avoid disturbing neighboring environment.

Nature & Biosphere

Whether in a backyard, forest, or other ecosystems, we enable users to monitor birds, insects, and other living beings. Compared to traditional biological observation methods, the light and easy to install design of NOIISE, provides technology for recording species over far remote areas. Especially in natural conservation areas, the voice detection features serve as a warning system for stress or emergencies for natural habitats such as forest fires or hunters.

The Makers

Designers of Systems

NOIISE is a digital innovation activity project developed by an interdisciplinary team that pooling expertise in academic, research, and industry. The project development and design of devices lead by CPL BIAS | The CyPhyLab, laboratory for cyber-physical systems in architecture and urban design. As a branch of Chair of Bio-Inspired Architecture and Sensoric at the Institute of Architecture, Technische Universität Berlin, their interdisciplinary research describes the architectural practice with cybernetic principles within the agenda of Humanification of Technology.

Signify provides a ceiling-based, connected sensor infrastructure, sound data acquisition, and management. Sensorberg provided expertise on service and UX design of the system and UI modules for app and web platform. AudEERING developed software for intelligent audio analysis, particularly speech and sound-scapes for NOIISE. Our pilot study was carried out within the premises of Betahaus Berlin, which provides co-working space for a community of 1000+ entrepreneurs, startups & freelancers.
